How living or working by the airport could affect one’s health … Research finds that elderly people above 65 years of age are at risk of cardiovascular problems because of long-term exposure to aircraft noise such as while living by an airport. Though the association and the physiological process as to how aircraft noise causes cardiovascular problems including hypertension and ischemic heart disease such as heart attack is unclear, it is clear that chronic exposure to aircraft noise causes anxiety, stress, and release of hormones. Potential process: Significant exposure to aircraft noise  anxiety & release of stress hormones  sympathetic activity & metabolic imbalance  compromised/ischemic cardiac tissue Reason for inconsistency or unclear findings has to do with small population size, small number of airports studied, and duration of exposure. Conclusion: remove your high-risk elderly from such environment, practice stress management techniques, and always follow-up with your primary care physician or specialist. http://www.bmj.com/content/347/bmj.f5561
